<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;"><span style="line-height: 19.4249992370605px;"><br /></span><br />I love quilting. And as soon as I saw <a href="http://quiltycat-quiltycat.blogspot.com/2012/04/ta-dah.html?showComment=1335537990530#c3036451479713008342" target="_blank">this</a> quilt from Quiltycat, I knew I had to make something similar when it came my month for the Stitch that Stash Quilt Bee and for the Lake Superior Modern Quilt Guild Bee. March is my month for both Bees, so bring on the LOVE!</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;">I'm totally digging the idea of expressing my love of

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> </div>
<p style="text-align: center;">Time behind the sewing machine has been few and far between it seems these last couple of months. Due to this I haven't kept up too well with the Patchwork, Please Sew Along.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"> </p>
<p style="text-align: center;">But this week's project was a simple one that I could squeeze in to life! It was the Happy Hexagon Trivet.</p>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/63738205@N07/9577359200" target="_blank" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img src="http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3758/9577359200_7ba3f037d7.jpg" id="blogsy-1377393970619.9673" class="aligncenter" alt="" width="500" height="445"></a></div>
<p style="text-align: center;"> </p>
<p style="text-align: center;">Ta-da! I used a combo of special fabrics... Some Japanese fabric and some fabric that my grandma gave me from her stash. I love using them... Makes me feel connected to her and her passion of sewing.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"> </p>
<p style="text-align: center;">I also got my bee blocks all put together</p>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://instagram.com/p/co8vhZC_k6/" target="_blank" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img src="http://distilleryimage2.s3.amazonaws.com/290eec6efdf411e2993f22000a9e0af5_7.jpg" id="blogsy-1377393970615.9546" class="aligncenter" alt="" width="500" height="500"></a></div>
<p style="text-align: center;">The mint green plus in the middle column in the second from the bottom row is mo longer there. It is a block I made and on its own it worked but putting it all together it is too close in value to the background, which became evident in this photo. Some careful unsewing allowed me to replace the plus without having to pull rows off the quilt. Now to get it quilted!</p>

</a></div>
<p style="text-align: center;">This week's project is The Polka-Dot-Café Apron.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"> </p>
<p style="text-align: center;">I started out yesterday making the patchwork </p>
<p style="text-align: center;"> </p>
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/63738205@N07/9138962911" target="_blank" style="text-align: center; -webkit-tap-highlight-color: rgba(26, 26, 26, 0.296875); -webkit-composition-fill-color: rgba(175, 192, 227, 0.230469); -webkit-composition-frame-color: rgba(77, 128, 180, 0.230469); margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; "><img src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7295/9138962911_3d4205a081.jpg" id="blogsy-1372220100519.1606" class="aligncenter" alt="" width="500" height="297"></a><div style="text-align: center;">It was fun fussy cutting the centers. I also got to play with some vintage scraps I picked up at the Minnesota Quilt Show (they are the little squares in the second and third blocks). The yellow gingham in the third block is fabric my grandma gave me from her stash. </div>
<p style="text-align: center;"> </p>
<p style="text-align: center;">When it came time to put together the apron I found some canvas like material in my stash to use. Plus some more gingham for the ties. All done!</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"> </p>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/63738205@N07/9129502598" target="_blank" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7336/9129502598_0060881bc9_z.jpg" id="blogsy-1372220100488.0044" class="aligncenter" alt="" width="440" height="635"></a></div>
<p style="text-align: center;"> Or so I thought.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"> </p>
<p style="text-align: center;">This more I looked at it, the less happy I was. While I posted the above picture on Flickr and Instagram and received such sweet comments, I wasn't completely happy with my workmanship. The canvas felt stiff. The ties weren't originally long enough to wrap around to the front to tie like I wanted them to - I cut them shorter than I was suppose to so I added to the ties which looked sloppy. And then my points on the patchwork were not looking to pointy in spots as my seam allowances were a little off. This also resulted in a wavey bottom where I was trying to hit those points.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"> </p>
<p style="text-align: center;">My own worse critic, I suppose, but I wasn't too excited about wearing it because of these things. After the time put into the patchwork and loving that part I decided to rip it down to the three blocks and rebuild it.</p>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Here's the after... <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/63738205@N07/9141009538" target="_blank" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img src="http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2809/9141009538_5c8c8c0f67.jpg" id="blogsy-1372220100448.724" class="aligncenter" alt="" width="500" height="375"></a></div>
<p style="text-align: center;"> </p>
<p style="text-align: center;">Here's what I did in the re-do...</p>
<p style="text-align: center;">A trip to Hobby Lobby today to find twill was the first step.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"> </p>
<p style="text-align: center;">Then I added a 1.5" strip of fabric to the bottom of the patchwork so I could finagle a bit more to get the points without the pocket looking all wavey on the bottom.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;">And for the ties, I ended up having enough gingham left to cut new pieces and encasing the top of the apron in it to add a fun element to the top of the apron. Plus they are long enough to wrap around to the front and tie!</p>
<p style="text-align: center;">An extra - while at Hobby Lobby I found some measuring tape ribbon in the scrap booking section, so a piece of that was added for another fun element!</p>
<p style="text-align: center;">It was a lot of unsewing but I'm loving the final product! Worth the time and effort. </p>
<p style="text-align: center;">Now I'm afraid to use it in - don't want it getting dirty! :)<br>
</p>
<p><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/63738205@N07/9138962911" target="_blank" style="text-align: center; -webkit-tap-highlight-color: rgba(26, 26, 26, 0.296875); -webkit-composition-fill-color: rgba(175, 192, 227, 0.230469); -webkit-composition-frame-color: rgba(77, 128, 180, 0.230469); margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; "><br>

The summer is off to a whirlwind start! The sewing has come in bursts with distance in between sessions. Getting ready for Vacation Bible School at our church sucked up all my regular work hours and a bulk of my free time. I had to choose between blogging and sewing when I did get a few moments and sewing (or a nap!) won!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://instagram.com/p/ZRKVd3C_iy/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" target="_blank"><img alt="" class="aligncenter" height="500" id="blogsy-1371699749898.2903" src="http://distilleryimage6.s3.amazonaws.com/c0d59f9cbc1911e282d422000a9e516a_7.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Love her self-described cheeseburger color scheme she's got going on!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://instagram.com/p/ZRMRUYi_lc/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" target="_blank"><img alt="" class="aligncenter" height="500" id="blogsy-1371699749907.61" src="http://distilleryimage4.s3.amazonaws.com/1d94af8cbc1c11e2b7a722000a9e5154_7.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Then it was time to break out my Patchwork, Please book by Aand make a Prettified Pincushion! (I always read Prettified as Petrified! Can you imagine some future civilization unearthing a petrified pincushion?!) </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I very rarely buy patterns, and even less frequently books but decided I wanted to play along with <a href="http://aquilterstable.blogspot.com/p/zakka-20-patchwork-please.html" target="_blank">Zakka 2.0 Sew Along</a>. I'm so glad I got this book! Love the projects in here and have already made a few.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<a href="http://instagram.com/p/ZbSNaii_t4/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" target="_blank"><img alt="" class="aligncenter" height="500" id="blogsy-1371699749917.6296" src="http://distilleryimage8.s3.amazonaws.com/9d834598bf3011e2be6b22000aa80214_7.jpg" width="500" /></a><br />
Here's a fun garage sale find! I'm sure some sewing notions will find a new home in here at some point!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<a href="http://instagram.com/p/Zjr-XIC_q-/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" target="_blank"><img alt="" class="aligncenter" height="500" id="blogsy-1371699749892.4766" src="http://distilleryimage2.s3.amazonaws.com/1102990ac1c111e2b1f822000a1f9751_7.jpg" width="500" /></a><br />
Another Patchwork, Please project. This time a boxy zippered pouch, using some fun fabric gifts from my Stitch That Stash buddies! Thanks, ladies!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://instagram.com/p/ZoQfTki_iS/" style="margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;" target="_blank"><img alt="" class="" height="500" id="blogsy-1371699749942.0876" src="http://distilleryimage10.s3.amazonaws.com/23e03b7ac32611e2913e22000ae8004c_7.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
And then my baby turned 10. And he requested I make him a bow tie so he could wear it when we go out for pizza on his big day! He picked the fabric from my stash, I found a pattern online, sewed it up and then used Google to figure out how to tie the bugger! He looked so stinkin' adorable wearing it! Happy Birthday, kiddo! Gah, where has the time gone and how can by baby be over 5 feet tall and wearing adult sized shoes?!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://instagram.com/p/ZsiNrki_po/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" target="_blank"><img alt="" class="aligncenter" height="500" id="blogsy-1371699749906.273" src="http://distilleryimage4.s3.amazonaws.com/46d11088c47411e29bac22000a9f13d0_7.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I found some time to sew up some more of my Stitch that Stash blocks and I laid them all out. I love, love, love them!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://instagram.com/p/aGkICNC_v3/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" target="_blank"><img alt="" class="aligncenter" height="500" id="blogsy-1371699749878.5037" src="http://distilleryimage3.s3.amazonaws.com/dc3eb15ecc6511e29a5822000a9f15d4_7.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The first official project of the Patchwork, Please Sew Along, Bell Pepper Coaster which found its way to a new home with Krista's Bee Blocks. "Because even a beverage needs a quilt!"</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://instagram.com/p/aHjRKMC_r3/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" target="_blank"><img alt="" class="aligncenter" height="500" id="blogsy-1371699749946.497" src="http://distilleryimage3.s3.amazonaws.com/f04d9aa0ccb211e29c2822000a1fbe4c_7.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Then my sister hinted that she could use a new purse so I made her a 241 Tote (Pattern by <a href="http://www.noodle-head.com/2011/03/241-tote-pattern.html" target="_blank" title="">Anna</a>). I picked up a painting canvas at Menards (the Midwest version of Lowes/Home Depot) and used that for the bag! It is sturdy and pretty darn cheap! I love the texture! Variations on the pattern - I made the strap longer because she wanted a cross body bag to make her hands free to keep up with her not quite 2 year old. I also only put one zipper on the front instead of two.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://instagram.com/p/aOoFlsi_oR/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" target="_blank"><br />
</a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Then came the actual week of VBS and my sewing machine was neglected, poor thing! But quilting was still on the brain as the Minnesota Quilt Show was in town! And there was a special trunk show with Victoria Findlay Wolfe being hosted by my favorite LQS, Hannah Johnson Fabric! Two friends joined me and we found her to speaking and quilts to be very inspiring! Love her idea of 15 minutes of play each day and "made fabric". I wanted to go home and sew, sew, sew but I had to get things ready for the next day of VBS! Darn obligations getting in the way of creativity!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://instagram.com/p/ahJdsFi_k4/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" target="_blank"><img alt="" class="aligncenter" height="500" id="blogsy-1371699749927.0222" src="http://distilleryimage8.s3.amazonaws.com/b07ad474d48211e2a72522000a1fb586_7.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Her quilts are amazing to look at up close! Pictures don't do them justice!<a href="http://instagram.com/p/ahdfCXi_iu/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" target="_blank"><img alt="" class="aligncenter" height="500" id="blogsy-1371699749868.8591" src="http://distilleryimage6.s3.amazonaws.com/2110b196d49b11e2934722000a9f3cae_7.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://instagram.com/p/aj1riLi_oK/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" target="_blank"><img alt="" class="aligncenter" height="500" id="blogsy-1371699749926.8804" src="http://distilleryimage10.s3.amazonaws.com/ea160fdcd55411e2896422000a1fb003_7.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
One of my dear friends bought me Victoria's book, 15 Minutes of Play, which she autographed. While talking to her we learned she used to live in Duluth and only 2 blocks from where we live! A fun "small world" moment.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The next day was my birthday. It was spent at VBS, then the quilt show for a couple of hours, dinner with family, and then my sweet husband surprised me with a gathering of friends at a new brewery tap room that some people we know opened in Duluth, Bent Paddle Brewery. A good cold beer after a long week, surround by friends was a the perfect way to end my brithday!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Then it was the weekend and we took off to Minneapolis for some grad parties, some time at Mall of America, for the boy - Sky Zone (an indoor trampoline park), and of course a fabric store! SR Harris was my choice. It is a big warehouse and they have EVERYTHING. And a lot of it. Fabric of all types - cotton, wool, decorator fabrics, knits, dancewear!, trims, leather, etc all sold for 50% off. It is piled high to the ceilings. The place is insane and overwhelming. And I only had 45 minutes.<a href="http://instagram.com/p/aofsg8C_mS/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" target="_blank"><img alt="" class="aligncenter" height="500" id="blogsy-1371699749944.3997" src="http://distilleryimage6.s3.amazonaws.com/b3de3364d6c011e2ad5622000a1f98e5_7.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
With the time crunch, I began scanning the piles and these are some of the treasures I came across. Not bad!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Then came Monday. My day off. Son is at a summer program. Husband at work. VBS is now a distant memory. I had a date with my sewing machine! Whoop! Whoop!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I had been thinking about Victoria Findlay Wolfe's quilts, made fabric, and a Swedish Bloom quilt in Patchwork, Please. Time to start playing with my red/pink scraps, sewing a bunch together and cutting the paper pieces from this new made fabric.<a href="http://instagram.com/p/aq5TbpC_iF/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" target="_blank"><img alt="" class="aligncenter" height="500" id="blogsy-1371699749940.2585" src="http://distilleryimage1.s3.amazonaws.com/36666836d77c11e2873022000a1fa909_7.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
There's no plan for this... Making it up as I go. When I got to the second border I decided to make the paper pieced leaves that we're in the book, but scaled down to fit. Figured out what size they needed to be, then drew up a new piece based off the book's pattern. Some used green "made fabric". It has been fun to see my ideas change as it comes together and running off in a new direction as an idea pops in my mind. Very liberating!</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://instagram.com/p/asN2vmi_iy/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" target="_blank"><img alt="" class="aligncenter" height="500" id="blogsy-1371699749897.9336" src="http://distilleryimage10.s3.amazonaws.com/6cd1e1b8d7e311e2b9d422000aa80579_7.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Can't wait to see where it leads me next!</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/63738205@N07/8665462120" target="_blank" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8244/8665462120_487461e088.jpg" id="blogsy-1366897925298.3098" class="aligncenter" alt="" width="500" height="375"></a>Last week schools were closed Monday and Friday due to the awful road conditions. The week before that the would have missed a day and a half due to weather like neighboring districts except our district was on "spring" break. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/63738205@N07/8680924710" target="_blank" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8105/8680924710_4909a84fd2.jpg" id="blogsy-1366897925302.856" class="aligncenter" alt="" width="500" height="500"></a>We are all kind of wondering why we live here. Including the robins. "We flew back here why?!"</div>
<p style="text-align: center;">Last Friday some friends shoveled out of the latest foot of snow we had received and we met up in our church fellowship hall for another Crafty Weekend. It was a good distraction from plotting how I might stow away in a friend's suitcase on her family's trip to the land of palm trees and Disney World.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;">I channeled my winter rage into sewing and I was quite productive (there was a lot of rage to channel)...</p>
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/63738205@N07/8664359611" target="_blank" style="text-align: center; -webkit-tap-highlight-color: rgba(26, 26, 26, 0.296875); -webkit-composition-fill-color: rgba(175, 192, 227, 0.230469); -webkit-composition-frame-color: rgba(77, 128, 180, 0.230469); margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; "><img src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8258/8664359611_9a93451674_z.jpg" id="blogsy-1366897925296.3577" class="aligncenter" alt="" width="500" height="639"></a><p style="text-align: center;"> My first Quarter 2 finish! Anna Maria Horner voile Plus Quilt, backed with flannel, no batting. I feel like Linus his blanket - I find myself carrying this from the bed to the couch and back. This will be a nice weight summer cover up (if we ever get summer!)</p>
<p style="text-align: center;">Next up, I made 2 lunch bags from <a href="http://ayumills.blogspot.com/2010/08/tutorial-lunch-bag.html" target="_blank" title="">this</a> Pink Penguin tutorial. I had made two more earlier in the week.</p>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/63738205@N07/8664350339" target="_blank" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8239/8664350339_3a89a9e7c8.jpg" id="blogsy-1366897925248.8826" class="aligncenter" alt="" width="500" height="380"></a></div>
<p style="text-align: center;"> The red one was a birthday present for my sister, coffee pots are for me, the brown was just because I could! And the fourth one I gave to a friend before I got a decent picture of it! They are fun and easy to make, using up a bunch of cotton duck leftovers from other projects. I lined the inside with some oil cloth/vinyl I picked up at Hobby Lobby, making it easy to wipe up spills.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"> </p>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/63738205@N07/8680921968" target="_blank" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8265/8680921968_2e7a6d8ca2.jpg" id="blogsy-1366897925310.0547" class="aligncenter" alt="" width="500" height="500"></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Then I made four of these cuties, the Puffy Pouch, another Pink Penguin <a href="http://ayumills.blogspot.com/2010/01/tutorial-puffy-pouch.html" target="_self" title=""></a><a href="http://ayumills.blogspot.com/2010/01/tutorial-puffy-pouch.html" target="_self" title="">tutorial</a>. The plan was to make one for a friend's birthday and one for myself. Then two friends that were crafting hinted strongly that they would each love one.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">I used a metal tape measure (thank you, Dollar Tree!) to do the closure instead of a "real" closure or Velcro as suggested by the pattern . While I love how they look, the tutorial is fantastic, and it was fun to make one, making four was not as fun! They are putsy with the pleats and they took longer than the lunch bags! I will probably make more in the future, but never more than one at a time!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Other things I've been working on during my days off and snow days...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/63738205@N07/8679820929" target="_blank" style="-webkit-tap-highlight-color: rgba(26, 26, 26, 0.296875); -webkit-composition-fill-color: rgba(175, 192, 227, 0.230469); -webkit-composition-frame-color: rgba(77, 128, 180, 0.230469); margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; "><img src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8266/8679820929_3f39635b94_c.jpg" id="blogsy-1366897925313.7131" class="aligncenter" alt="" width="500" height="683"></a>Pieced together these random blocks. <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">This weekend we may get up to 60F! What a difference a few days can make! Looking forward to sun and melting snow! Dare we say Spring has arrived?!</div>

Or should I say, "spring" break. We started out Monday with rain/snow mix, then all that melted. But on Thursday Mother Nature played the ultimate joke. 40 mph winds with gusts into 60+mph and a foot of snow by the time it finally quit. Husband's job sent everyone home early that day and stayed closed into Friday. Yesterday wasn't nice, but it wasn't snowing. Until this afternoon. The wind is still howling and it is snowing again. We could get 8 inches. Good grief. Enough already!</p>
<div class="separator" style="text-align: center;clear: both; "><a href="http://instagram.com/p/X-bRJpC_qw/" target="_blank" style=""><img src="http://distilleryimage4.s3.amazonaws.com/0c43289aa2da11e2a88722000a1f90d0_7.jpg" id="blogsy-1366069995314.2192" class="alignnone" alt="" width="500" height="500"></a></div>
<p style="text-align: center;"> Here's our yard at 10am Thursday and again at 1:30pm. It fell hard and fast. And so did my hopes of Spring.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;">{I fell asleep before I finished this post last night... Our kids got a bonus day of spring break as the closed school today due to the snow and poor road conditions. My son put on shorts and kept them on when he put his snow pants on and went out to play! Way to protest winter, kiddo!}</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"> </p>
<p style="text-align: center;">With the unexpected snow days it has meant some time around the sewing machine. I pulled out a pile of random blocks and other UFOs that I've made over the years and decided it was time to take inventory. And what a better way to hold myself accountable and get stuff done by signing up for Quarter 2 of the Finish-A-Long!</p>
<p align="center"><a href="http://www.shecanquilt.blogspot.com" title="she can quilt"><img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjZUq8BO2Bn1SdtVzgn8T4vzyxljedH7EvLbRYl4Xu9VojodrJCSzxbyCsyN-Q16sbNNPXBw0AXNSahOdYffKufSjqeFtrXjzDANnJhwxjatVluf3_-p3FV-I3qjvdElUf_aakXzKverP-x/s170/DSC_0273+4.jpg" id="blogsy-1366069995239.144" class="" alt="she can quilt"></a></p>
<div class="separator" style="text-align: center;clear: both; "> </div>
<p style="text-align: center;">Here's what I want off the shelf and into use:</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"> </p>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Random blocks using Tufted Tweets<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/63738205@N07/8644458493" target="_blank" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; " title=""><img src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8240/8644458493_4026abd000.jpg" id="blogsy-1366069995242.3193" class="aligncenter" alt="" width="500" height="375"></a></div>

<p style="text-align: center;"> Plus there's a low volume quilt that I have squares it for, and some of Sarah Watts' Timber and Leaf mixed with some other stuff that I'm not quite sure what it will become!</p>
<p style="text-align: center;">So that is 6 quilts... Hmmmm... Wonder how many I can knock out this quarter. A few more snow days and I might have them done!</p>

Random Thing #1: First off, I've been trying out Feedly and Bloglovin to replace Google Reader (RIP). I think I'm going to land with Bloglovin (just wish they had a dedicated app for the iPad - hopefully soon!)</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.bloglovin.com/blog/3314983/?claim=zkkmsbnwtwr">Follow my blog with Bloglovin</a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br />
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Random Thing #2: On Sunday morning I decided to make myself a necklace for Easter. I had absolutely *nothing* else to do that morning before church. Just an Easter breakfast the youth group kids were serving. And a children's sermon to finish up. And a son to get ready (and to keep out of his new found chocolate). So I made a necklace out of some beads I had laying around, a brooch I found at a rummage sale, and some ribbon in my stash. And lived in denial of the busy day that was ahead.<br />
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Necklace: Check.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Son dressed for church: Check.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Congregation served breakfast: Check. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Keeping son out of chocolate: Not so much.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/lifeontheselvageedge/8615836961/" title="Untitled by Life on the Selvage Edge, on Flickr"><img alt="Untitled" height="240" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8384/8615836961_9153c654ae.jpg" width="320" /></a>
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br />
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Random #3: Got my March Stitch that Stash Block done and mailed out:</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/lifeontheselvageedge/8594315829/" title="Stitch that Stash March Block by Life on the Selvage Edge, on Flickr"><img alt="Stitch that Stash March Block" height="375" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8103/8594315829_22a4a29c15.jpg" width="500" /></a>
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.thecozypumpkin.com/" target="_blank">Amanda</a> picked this fun block and our bee mates made a variety of colors. <br />
Can't wait to see it all come together!<br />
<br />
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Random #4: Yesterday I finished up another project, a table runner for our dining room table.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/lifeontheselvageedge/8616941766/" title="Untitled by Life on the Selvage Edge, on Flickr"><img alt="Untitled" height="375" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8244/8616941766_45eabd470d.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
FYI: the candle will not be lit when the dried up palm branches are above them. Safety, safety.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I love how the triangles turned out with the Oakshott, solid whites and off-whites, and some random black and white prints thrown in. Any bets on how long until spaghetti sauce ends up on it? I'm guessing the next time we have spaghetti.... :)</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br />
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Random # 5: Using my scraps from the above table runner, I made a little mug rug for my desk at work.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/lifeontheselvageedge/8615883247/" title="Untitled by Life on the Selvage Edge, on Flickr"><img alt="Untitled" height="320" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8386/8615883247_8fd5716598.jpg" width="320" /></a>
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Makes me happy, especially with the cute mug my coworker got me for Christmas sitting on top of it! </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Now to try not losing it under all the piles of papers...</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
And there's some random finishes!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>

Anybody else reading the news and Facebook through a skeptical lens today?!</p>
<p style="text-align: center;">Since it is now April, it is my month for the Stitch that Stash bee!</p>
<p align="center"><a href="http://www.flickr.com/groups/2119338@N20/" title="Stitch That Stash "><img src="http://i1220.photobucket.com/albums/dd449/jiminykrikkit/stsbutton125x125_zpsbaae62f4.jpg" id="blogsy-1364828951692.6118" class="" alt="Stitch That Stash " width="125" height="125"></a></p>
<p style="text-align: center;">Here's the block I'm asking my bee mates to make!</p>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/63738205@N07/8609137629" target="_blank" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><br>
</a></div>
<p style="text-align: center;">I stumbled across this block on Pinterest. Rachel (woodenspoon on Flickr) posted this picture with the cutting dimensions</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/wooden_spoon/8584301543/" title="Dimensions for low volume charm plus block by wooden spoon, on Flickr"></a><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/wooden_spoon/8584301543/" title="Dimensions for low volume charm plus block by wooden spoon, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8105/8584301543_730b112f8c.jpg" id="blogsy-1364828951712.539" class="" alt="Dimensions for low volume charm plus block" width="500" height="388"></a><br>
</p>
<p style="text-align: center;">After doing some pretty "loud" quilts lately, I've found myself drawn to some quieter fabrics. Add my love of texty prints that are often low volume, this block drew me write in! (Didn't hurt that I participated in a Flickr swap for text charms and they came in the mail the day I saw this block!)</p>
<p style="text-align: center;">Here are some of the 8 blocks I've already made!</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"> </p>

I had to go look this morning and find out when I started my scrap vomit quilt. It was the beginning of September 2012 when I first posted about it. It was a quilt that I got off to a steady start but lost steam part way through. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
It was stuck at 3/7th of the way done for an awful long time!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Then in January and February I tackled it again, soon getting the blocks done and getting the whole thing pieced together.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
Friday morning I decided today was the day to get the thing basted. Let's move this sucker off the UFO list and get it on our bed! I brought it to work (love working a church with all the tables to spread my projects out on!) and got it all basted up in the afternoon before heading home.</div>

<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I spent a few hours quilting it on Friday. I had bought my first spool of Aurifil thread earlier in the week when a LQS was having a big sale. Oh. My. Goodness. My machine just loved it!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Saturday was spent doing some more quilting and soon the binding was on! </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I used <a href="http://patsloan.typepad.com/quiltershome/pat-sloan-machine-binding-tutorial.html" target="_blank">Pat Sloan's</a> way of putting the binding on by machine stitching it. Usually I hand stitch the binding on but this is going to be used and plus it is so big! I didn't think I'd be patient to finish it! The only thing I did different was making my binding 2.5" and folding it in half like I usually do. After sewing the binding to the back side of the quilt, you use a reverse blanket stitch to hold it down. It worked so slick! The Aurifil was 50wt and using it with the binding, it just disappeared. (Print on the binding totally helped hide the stitch lines as well.)</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br />
For the binding I used this:</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.robertkaufman.com/assets/fabric/detail/AFR-13501-2.jpg?1930815451" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://www.robertkaufman.com/assets/fabric/detail/AFR-13501-2.jpg?1930815451" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Scribble Notes in Black - <mysearch><a href="http://www.robertkaufman.com/fabrics/designers/carolyn_friedlander/">Carolyn Friedlander</a> from <a href="http://www.robertkaufman.com/fabrics/architextures/">Architextures</a></mysearch></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Love how this binding looks... frames it plus it gets some texty stuff going on that I love so much!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
One of my favorite things on a quilt is hand stitching. Absolutely love how it looks, especially Perle cotton. I auditioned my Perle cotton stash to my husband and we decided orange was the color to go with and it would go in the white squares of the B Blocks. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/lifeontheselvageedge/8588844717/" title="Scrap Vomit by Life on the Selvage Edge, on Flickr"><img alt="Scrap Vomit" height="375" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8381/8588844717_fd6c66236d.jpg" width="500" /></a>
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
With aching fingers, I hand stitched away on Saturday and Sunday afternoon. Woke up at 5am on Monday unable to go back to sleep. Should I play Candy Crush or hand stitch? Hand stitching won and soon all 24 blocks had orange stitches running through them! I threw it in the wash and soon a wonderful crinkly quilt was emerging from the dryer!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://quiltstory.blogspot.com/" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" target="_blank"></a><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/lifeontheselvageedge/8588842759/" title="Scrap Vomit by Life on the Selvage Edge, on Flickr"><img alt="Scrap Vomit" height="375" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8528/8588842759_8a59babeb1.jpg" width="500" /></a>

<a href="http://quiltstory.blogspot.com/" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" target="_blank"></a><br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://quiltstory.blogspot.com/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" target="_blank"></a></div>
Here's a shot of it on our bed. I'm in love.<br />
<br />
My husband is going to help me this weekend get some pictures of it outside. There's no way I can wrestle this big thing, especially with all the mud that's showing up at the edges of the snowbanks. Hope the weather cooperates!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I think I slept with a smile on my face all night knowing this new quilt was keeping me warm!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I've noticed that after all the bright colors I've been working with lately, the pallet that I'm pulling for upcoming projects is much more.... calm.... low volume seems to be calling out!<br />

Wow... a lot has happened since I last posted! January was a blur of traveling with family and then for work. And honestly, what happened to February?! I swear it just started!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Here are some of the things I've been up to:</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
For the <a href="http://www.flickr.com/groups/2119338@N20/" target="_blank">Stitch that Stash Bee</a> ...</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/groups/2119338@N20/" title="Stitch That Stash "><img alt="Stitch That Stash " src="http://i1220.photobucket.com/albums/dd449/jiminykrikkit/stsbutton125x125_zpsbaae62f4.jpg" style="border: none;" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
January's block were a Churn Dash at the request of Deb from<a href="http://simplymissluella.blogspot.com/" target="_blank"> Simply Miss Luella</a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/lifeontheselvageedge/8385929535/" title="Stitch that Stash Bee - January - Churn Dadh (block 2) by Life on the Selvage Edge, on Flickr"><img alt="Stitch that Stash Bee - January - Churn Dadh (block 2)" height="499" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8497/8385929535_1f51fb2de1.jpg" width="500" /></a>
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/lifeontheselvageedge/8382958019/" title="Stitch that Stash - January Block by Life on the Selvage Edge, on Flickr"><img alt="Stitch that Stash - January Block" height="487" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8363/8382958019_5cb3971d4a.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Next, I jumped on the instagram quilting sensation... the <a href="http://quiltville.com/scrappytrips.shtml" target="_blank">Scrappy Trip Along</a>!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
My son had been requesting a new quilt. And he was quite specific in his requests:</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
1. It had to have a fleece back</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
2. It needed to be heavy</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
3. It needed to be fluffy (high loft batting)</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
4. It needed to be tied</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
How does a 9 year old have such specific quilting requests?! </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The Scrappy Trip Along seemed to be the right fit for him!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br />
There's always a furry helper when I'm doing layouts!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/lifeontheselvageedge/8331421456/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="16 blocks done! And my furry little helper. #scrappytripalong by Life on the Selvage Edge, on Flickr"><img alt="16 blocks done! <div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Here's a close up of the twin sized quilt...
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/lifeontheselvageedge/8403122933/" title="#scrappytripalong all done! by Life on the Selvage Edge, on Flickr"><img alt="#scrappytripalong all done!" height="500" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8187/8403122933_eff30ebe19.jpg" width="500" /></a>
</div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
And here's the boy all snuggled up on the first night he got it, which happened to be a -20° that night. Perfect timing!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/lifeontheselvageedge/8403123961/" title="Loving his new quilt on the -15 degree cold night. #scrappytripalong by Life on the Selvage Edge, on Flickr"><img alt="Loving his new quilt on the -15 degree cold night. #scrappytripalong" height="500" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8370/8403123961_7f5e198f71.jpg" width="500" /></a>
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
He has used this every night, dragging it to my parents when he's stayed with them, and it often found on the couch as well! I'm glad it is getting lots of love!<br />
<br />
Next up was February's Stitch that Stash bee block, an Ohio Star for Kristan at <a href="http://doodledodesigns.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">Doodle Do Designs</a><br />
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Then it was time to finish up some UFOs that have been hanging around for far too long!<br />
We had another crafting weekend at the church I work at. It's such a great time to hang out with a fun group of women while we sew/bead/scrapbook our Friday and Saturday away!<br />
<br />
I made a mini quilt using half square triangles out of blocks I've had sitting around for along time.<br />
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/lifeontheselvageedge/8480519314/" title="To the Point by Life on the Selvage Edge, on Flickr"><img alt="To the Point" height="351" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8526/8480519314_fb8b43fbac.jpg" width="500" /></a>
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br />
I couldn't bear to cut off the points and I was feeling to lazy to do setting triangles so I left the irregular edges. However, I'm glad I didn't realize how long it would take me to bind the edges like this when I started out on this route because setting triangles would have been WAY easier! A ton of work doing the inside angles, but I love how it looks! Its new home is over the back of a chair in my office. So bright and cheery and fun!<br />
<br />
Yesterday was quite productive day... I love Mondays: my day off and I'm home by myself! Love my family and being with them, but I also enjoy my Mondays of being home alone from 7:30am-4pm. My time to recharge my batteries, quilt, clean, etc. I got the house picked up some and also made it to the gym for a workout. And I quilted and came up with a BIG finish.... My <a href="http://imagingermonkey.blogspot.com/2010/10/care-for-some-scrap-vomit-aka-quilt.html" target="_blank">Scrap Vomit</a> quilt top is done! 49 blocks that are made up of 49 squares. 2,401 2.5" squares later, we are well on our way to having a king size quilt on our bed!<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/lifeontheselvageedge/8507638579/" title="Scrap Vomit top all done! 2,401 2.5" squares... Whew! by Life on the Selvage Edge, on Flickr"><img alt="Scrap Vomit top all done! 2,401 2.5" squares... Whew!" height="500" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8522/8507638579_d6ebc8cffb.jpg" width="500" /></a>
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Next up, the attempt to quilt it on my home machine! It sort of gives me frights to think about, but I'm going to forge ahead!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
2013 is off to a good start!<br />

The last month has just flown by! We had a great Christmas spent with family and rang in the New Year with friends. Then a few days later we left behind cold Minnesota and jetted off to Disney World with my parents and my sister and her family! The weather was gorgeous - in the upper 70s and low 80s (on our last morning I got a text that our son's school was cancelled due to icy conditions! Made it hard to leave!) The whole trip was to celebrate my parent's retirement (when we got back my dad had two more days left and my mom retired back in April). We had a most magical week! Disney is truly a happy place for me and it was special being there with my wonderful family. And to make it extra special, it was my niece's first trip! She loved the characters and she was quite the character herself!<br />

Before we headed off to Florida I squeezed in some quilting... I got sucked in to the Scrappy Tripalong as I saw blocks popping up on Instagram. I asked my son what he thought of it and he liked it so this is destined for his bed. So far I have 16 blocks done and they are a blast to put together! Just need enough to make it a twin size. Here's a <a href="http://quiltville.com/scrappytrips.shtml" target="_blank">link</a> to the pattern - it's a fun one to do!<br />

I'm also participating in my first virtual quilting bee, Stitch that Stash, with a wonderful group of women. Thank you to Kris at <a href="http://dukesayssewwhat.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">Duke Says Sew What</a> for extending the invitation! First up is a churn dash... I got the first one started tonight. Look forward to posting pictures soon! Have to get them done soon since in a little over a week I head out to California for a work conference. This year is off to a great start - a week in Florida and then a week in California all in the same month?! Makes a chilly Minnesota January much more tolerable!</div>

A couple of Christmas presents are done...</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
A Church Basement Lady apron for my mom. Who hinted that she wanted an apron. I believe her way of "hinting" was "I need an apron. I'm getting messy when I cook." One apron coming right up! This will be given to her early because next weekend we are making lefse, krumkake, and rosettes. Don't want her getting messy!</div>

And a Hip(ster) Hop Hippity Hop Sock Bunny.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I found some fun socks at Target and used<a href="http://www.lilblueboo.com/2012/03/a-sock-bunny-a-tutorial.html" target="_blank"> this tutorial</a> from Lil Blue Boo. This is for my 15 month old niece. Since I couldn't do buttons for eyes (choking hazard), I thought some spectacles would be a good alternative. And then was up late when I came up with the name. Gotta love sleep deprived loopiness. I showed these to a few people at work and now I have orders for 5 bunnies! </div>

Today and tomorrow we're having another "Crafty" Weekend at church, where we all drag over our projects to the fellowship hall and we craft the weekend away! Can't wait to knock off a few more projects!</div>

My goal the last couple of months is to finish up some WIPs. Too many of these projects staring me in the face and it's about time I did something about some of them. </div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I've finished up quite a few things...</div>

This quilt that I gave as a wedding present to some friends.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
And this, which was a wedding present to my sister and her husband. The top was done and it was all sandwiched together for their wedding 2.5 years ago. I finally got around to quilting it last month. Sorry, guys!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
And this one was for our family. It originally was started with plans to live on our Queen bed. Then we went and got a new bed, King sized, and it sat undone. Right now it's living on our couch and is perfect for snuggling under on the cool nights that have arrived to Northern Minnesota.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
This week I found my <a href="http://thimbleblossoms.bigcartel.com/product/hopscotch-pattern-149-pdf-pattern" target="_blank">Hopscotch</a> blocks that I started eons ago and lost steam on...</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/lifeontheselvageedge/7003010965/" title="About half the blocks done by Life on the Selvage Edge, on Flickr"><img alt="About half the blocks done" height="375" src="http://farm7.staticflickr.com/6092/7003010965_96f07f41fe.jpg" width="500" /></a>
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Things weren't really clicking for me... not sure what it was about this quilt. I love the pattern, love the fabrics but it just didn't make me excited to work on. There was no way I was going to make the rest of the blocks - just being honest with myself! I started playing with the blocks and realized I had enough with the white points and the coral Amy Butler dots to make a tree skirt. I've been wanting to replace the store bought one we've had for quite a few years. I see a project being salvaged! </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br />
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

I put it together with a bit of time the last couple of evenings and it's now living under our tree! There are still some of the other blocks, and I see those taking on a new life as a wall hanging or table runner. (So hard to take a good picture this time of year! Sorry about the not-so-great image!)</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
This is the first time in quite a few years that we've gotten our tree up this early. And I'll admit, the last couple of years the tree is the only thing that went up (and I was digging for the stockings on Christmas Eve so Santa could visit!) However, we got a bunch of snow on Thanksgiving evening and it put me right into the Christmas spirit! The house is all decorated and and I'm loving the evenings of all the lights and decorations surrounding us.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
I've got a bunch of these blocks just waiting to be made into something... not quite sure yet! I'm thinking a wall hanging for our staircase.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
And I've got a bunch of 5" squares cut from voile... a project I started last year on Christmas day. Good grief! I really do like starting things more than finishing them!</div>

First Christmas present made! A pillowcase for my 9 year old son, a HUGE Harry Potter fan. </div>

<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Based off of <a href="http://www.etsy.com/listing/69311133/boy-wizard-pillow" target="_blank">this</a> pillow on Etsy, but the one I made is a pillowcase instead. It seems like there's not much I can sew for my pre-teen boy, but when I saw this I knew I had to make it for him. Can't wait for him to open it Christmas morning!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
It has a flannel back. The glasses are embroidered and buttons were used for eyes.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Any friends that see this... </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Sssssshhhhhhh! Don't tell him his present! ;) </div>

It's meeting up with the two friends that got me started quilting (shout out to Katrina and Holly!) when we lived in the same town and now is our annual reunion as they've scattered to new areas. Katrina attended the retreat with her college roommate and then she started inviting family and friends and the group has grown. This year two friends joined me and Samn and Kathy got to experience their first quilt retreat!<br />
<br />
The retreat we go to is held at <a href="http://www.camplebanon.org/" target="_blank">Camp Lebanon</a> in this teeny tiny town in Central Minnesota, which means road trip! We went through St. Cloud, MN and we shopped until we dropped. And all fabric/craft stores... how fun is that?! Mill End (a big fabric outlet-type store), Grubers Quilt Shop, JoAnn's, Craft's Direct (think a combo of Michael's/Hobby Lobby/JoAnn's on steroids)... and a stop at Panera for lunch! Our town is severely lacking in the "cool craft store" department. We have Hancock. But come January, Hobby Lobby is coming to town! But as for our St. Cloud visit... I didn't take a single picture. Oops. (This is sort of the theme for the retreat)<br />
<br />
At camp we got to work right away and my Weekender Bag was hit hard (which is one of the reasons I didn't take squat for pictures... I was in the zone. The quilting zone.) The first night I was up until 2:30am (but I wasn't the last one up... someone in our group was up until 4:30am!) <br />
<br />
The bag was finished in the wee hours of the morning on Sunday at 1:30am. And then I proceeded to stand there for a half hour - petting the bag, opening zippers, and gazing longingly at it!<br />
<br />
And here it is:<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/lifeontheselvageedge/8177302292/" title="Untitled by Life on the Selvage Edge, on Flickr"><img alt="Untitled" height="375" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8477/8177302292_80f2e6cc3d.jpg" width="500" /></a><br />
<br />
Ended up going with the quilt as you go method of construction with cotton duck and batting.<br />
<br />
These were a lifesaver, holding all the layers together...<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/lifeontheselvageedge/8177256725/" title="Untitled by Life on the Selvage Edge, on Flickr"><img alt="Untitled" height="500" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8487/8177256725_a1023aa901.jpg" width="375" /></a><br />
<br />
Modifications...<br />
<br />
I made the straps wider (cut them at 5 inches and placed a piece of Peltex inside). The straps were also secured them with an X between the two stitching lines.<br />
<br />
I added two extra pockets...<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/lifeontheselvageedge/8184009574/" title="Weekender Bag by Life on the Selvage Edge, on Flickr"><img alt="Weekender Bag" height="375" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8210/8184009574_a61da6fd85.jpg" width="500" /></a>
<br />
One on the inside lining... (The lining fabric I found at Mill End and it was a lightweight home dec fabric found on the remnant table)<br />
<br />
And the second one...<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/lifeontheselvageedge/8177261411/" title="Front pocket view of the Weekender Bag by Life on the Selvage Edge, on Flickr"><img alt="Front pocket view of the Weekender Bag" height="375" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8340/8177261411_85ec512069.jpg" width="500" /></a>
<br />
On the inside of the outside pocket piece. Thought it would be a handy spot to put my phone or boarding pass while traveling, making them easy accessible but secure. (Side note - The Robert Kaufmann Safety Pin fabric I found on Mill End's Remnant table. For $3/yard I believe! Score!)<br />
<br />
Somehow I managed to make the whole thing without breaking a single needle. I can hardly believe it! I came prepared with a bunch of extras but the denim needle I put in for the construction portion held up!<br />
<br />
Things I would do different if I were to make another one? I would cut the batting to the right size (1/2" smaller than the pattern piece) and then oversize the cotton duck and piece work. Then once the quilting is done, center the pattern piece over the batting, and then cut to pattern size. Things got a bit off and my pieces weren't quite the right size.<br />
<br />
It was a ton of work but totally worth it! I loved having all the dedicated time to work on it and it was the perfect project for the retreat. It's already getting lots of use!<br />
<br />
Here are a few pictures of other projects that friend's worked on (I didn't pull out my camera until almost everyone had packed up...)<br />
<br />

<br />
What an awesome weekend! I love the dedicated time to sew and the camp takes such good care of us. The food is amazing and the having massage therapists on hand? Genius! This camp knows hospitality!<br />

I *really* like starting new projects. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The thrill of pulling out new fabrics. Trying out a new technique. Seeing it come together.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
All I was going to do last night was pull fabric for my Amy Butler Weekender bag, and get it packed up to take to the quilt retreat this weekend. Watch election results roll in and play with fabric. That's all. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I've been scouring blogs, reading about everyone's run-ins with this challenging bag, making notes on my pattern, and getting excited to give it a go. Quilt as you go was my method of attack. I got the duck and batting cut out a few days ago. (I like going into the quilt retreat with a bit of a start on a project)</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Then there sat those pieces right next to the fabrics I selected. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Just begging to be tried....</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/lifeontheselvageedge/8163274828/" title="Beginning of my Weekender Bag by Life on the Selvage Edge, on Flickr"><img alt="Beginning of my Weekender Bag" height="375" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8207/8163274828_442f103ff3.jpg" width="500" /></a>
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
And there is the outside pocket for one side.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
*shrug shoulders* </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
What can I say? No impulse control whatsoever when it comes to a new sewing project. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
My sweet husband wondered if I'll have a project left to work on this weekend. I can fairly confidentially say... I think so (this project is way too complex for what little extra time I have this week).... Although I'm guessing another slab will get done. And I'm thinking that time will be right now because I have a bit of time before I have to get to work this morning!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>

I'm so excited to see the friends that got me started quilting but now live hours away, work on projects, eat yummy food, and laugh/sew into all hours of the night. Plus, this year I'll be bringing two friends with me for their first experience! Company for the 3.5 hour car ride? YAY!!<br />
<br />
A few weeks ago I told myself before going on the retreat I had to tie up some loose strings in the form of some looooooong overdue WIP. The one of utmost importance was the wedding quilt that I was in the process of making for my sister and her husband. For their wedding that happened 3.5 years ago. Good grief. It sat with the top all done and sandwiched together BEFORE their wedding happened, just waiting to be quilted and I couldn't get up the gumption to get it done. But I'm excited to say that on Saturday night I handed it over to them! Just in time for the cold weather that is sneaking into Northern Minnesota!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/lifeontheselvageedge/8152702827/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="Untitled by Life on the Selvage Edge, on Flickr"><img alt="Untitled" height="375" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8209/8152702827_a1681c1269.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
Excuse the "I'm standing in the closet with my phone trying to get a decent picture" picture. </div>
<br />
My smarty pants brother-in-law was wondering when they would get pillow shams. I said I was planning on that gift for their 15 anniversary with an expected delivery date of their 20th anniversary. Take that, mister! :)<br />
<br />
I also finished up a wall hanging that will either go on our staircase wall or in my office at work. <br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/lifeontheselvageedge/8158453425/" title="Untitled by Life on the Selvage Edge, on Flickr"><img alt="Untitled" height="500" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8346/8158453425_1eb8812655.jpg" width="375" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="text-align: start;">This wasn't a long overdue sort of one... has only been in works for a couple of weeks. My scrap bin was an out of control mess. I sorted through things and got stuff grouped by color. Decided to put a little dent in the pile and made this scrappy log cabin. It makes me happy! It's quilted with straight lines through the blocks and the sashing is a raindrop sort of quilting.</span><br />
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
And who appreciates the quilts the most in the house? </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/lifeontheselvageedge/8152727686/" title="Rough life by Life on the Selvage Edge, on Flickr"><img alt="Rough life" height="500" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8490/8152727686_e8c2e815c1.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
(He was snoring so loud, laying on his back!)</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Time to start getting my stuff packed for the weekend. I'm going to tackle the Amy Butler Weekender Bag at the retreat! <a href="http://www.flickr.com/groups/thelongweekend/" target="_blank">Off to take notes</a> from hearty souls that have made this bag and survived to tell their tales! </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
There are so many gorgeous quilts! Thought I'd throw one of my recent finishes into the mix.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This is my Blackhoof Valley Quilt. It's been sitting in the "Almost Finished, but Not Quite" pile for far too long. The top was done, it was even sandwiched together, but quilted? Nope. Finally last weekend I set my mind to get 'er done. And done I got 'er!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This quilt has a special place in my heart. My grandma was quite the quilter in her day. She also did beautiful embroidery work, often times combining the two mediums into gorgeous quilts. I think my love of quilting and sewing comes from her. When she had to leave the farm to move to assisted living she gave me a bunch of her fabric that I have held on to all these years. When Denyse Schmidt's Picnic and Fairgrounds line came out I knew it would mix perfectly with some of my grandma's fabric, along with some others in my stash. It was a simple pattern that I came up with featuring rectangles.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhNh8_xbV2gyMz6CMvzoLf3hG04uRkWKtr4-tpoAW5dLfy63kSLCiA5rxlWosjCPNmTCM_4qyjPKuMsVbfD0H94U4kRSgiKkPpYOCrore1PDBZCmJudjCPOwgoMFs8d7p1m3ff-mHmheOqi/s1600/100_6493.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhNh8_xbV2gyMz6CMvzoLf3hG04uRkWKtr4-tpoAW5dLfy63kSLCiA5rxlWosjCPNmTCM_4qyjPKuMsVbfD0H94U4kRSgiKkPpYOCrore1PDBZCmJudjCPOwgoMFs8d7p1m3ff-mHmheOqi/s320/100_6493.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
As I look at her fabric in the quilt, I'm reminded of her. The days spent having her help me embroider dish towels (I'm quite sure I never finished a single one!). The quilts that she showed at the local county fair. The handmade clothes she made. There's one fabric in particular that she had used to make the collar on a shirt and some pants... I can picture her wearing that outfit! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
Grandma can no longer sew, but she has passed on her love of fabric and creating to me, and I am so thankful for that. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>

Journaling is something I always have good intentions to do, but my follow through is less than stellar.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Then a couple of weeks ago a blog I follow (<a href="http://www.lilblueboo.com/" target="_blank">Lil Boo Blue</a>) shared that she was going to be starting The Lil Journal Project. Each day she would share a different topic to journal about. And it wouldn't be just writing... there would be the option to draw and sketch. YAY! Colored pencils. Sharpies. Paint. FUN!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Topics of things like drawing a picture of your first classroom that you have a memory of. Listing the vehicles you've owned and the memories associated with each car. Today's topic is remembering books from your childhood. Topics I wouldn't think about writing about, but a great way to dig deep in my memory and record some of it.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.lilblueboo.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/TLJP_day31.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="216" src="http://www.lilblueboo.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/TLJP_day31.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
(From <a href="http://www.lilblueboo.com%29/" target="_blank">www.lilblueboo.com</a>)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This sounds right up my alley! I liked the idea of being prompted to write about different things. I liked the drawing idea. But my good intentions were as far as I got with this.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Until yesterday.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
While picking up some stuff at Walmart yesterday I saw a sketch book on an end cap by the craft department. A small book, plain cover. Unlined pages (I hate lines!). $6. Perfect for the project! I threw it in the cart and realized my intentions were moving towards reality.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgENz8niXcoP0df0r_Q8pQUzha_agYJI8djCgE0fzowfvdZCPpT8PeORNXUsayasCylCt98hsa8t-5Wb6A9lRpwKhpbGEmrvoPaPUA3RzpZgwDTTGk646t1sZ3GWhjXLdbVn-e18p46CH5s/s1600/Sketch+book.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgENz8niXcoP0df0r_Q8pQUzha_agYJI8djCgE0fzowfvdZCPpT8PeORNXUsayasCylCt98hsa8t-5Wb6A9lRpwKhpbGEmrvoPaPUA3RzpZgwDTTGk646t1sZ3GWhjXLdbVn-e18p46CH5s/s320/Sketch+book.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
(from <a href="http://www.walmart.com/ip/Daler-Rowney-Simply-Sketchbook/17617575" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Walmart</a>)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Last night I decided to dress up the outside and made a journal cover. </div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
I googled for some ideas on how to make a journal cover and ended up using the <a href="http://artquiltmaker.com/blog/aq-projects-tutorials/aq-tutorials/journal-cover-tutorial/" target="_blank">directions</a> from Artquiltmaker blog. Pretty simple and straightforward. I knew I wanted to use some of my black linen and to do leaf shaped applique on the front, plus there had to be perle cotton stitching.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
While poking around on the internet for journal covers, I somehow came across the idea of putting different threads (like perle cotton) on your bobbin (while still using regular thread on top) when it comes to quilting a project. I was intrigued! With a bit more research, I followed the advice from <a href="http://www.threadsmagazine.com/item/5025/bobbin-work-when-threads-are-too-thick-for-the-needle">www.threadsmagaine.com</a>. The images on their site are really neat - So many cool things you can do with bobbin work!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I pulled out the Perle Cotton 8 I had, put it on a bobbin, increased the stitch length a bit, marked my lines on the interfacing on the back, and gave it a go... all I can say is AWESOME! Sort of that hand-stitched look, without having to commit the time (that I didn't have!) You can see a bit of the top thread, so make sure you pick something that either matches or coordinates with your bobbin thread.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiUE-EHDO4RH8vUAhAnKl1jfsQlBp5zTtuvtuvqgsHXuPic_J0M8X8kplNEic2WqVepKUcYf9vzHae2vpe7_IWexxuxU8H4iU8-XMEdZSLaW5vSjHP-efbY4IlNmfM0FiIhSXXpcFON96h6/s1600/IMG_2752.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiUE-EHDO4RH8vUAhAnKl1jfsQlBp5zTtuvtuvqgsHXuPic_J0M8X8kplNEic2WqVepKUcYf9vzHae2vpe7_IWexxuxU8H4iU8-XMEdZSLaW5vSjHP-efbY4IlNmfM0FiIhSXXpcFON96h6/s320/IMG_2752.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
When I got it done I couldn't wait to dive in and start writing and drawing in it. I loved the suggestion to just open the book and start writing wherever. Very freeing. That starting at the front can seem too daunting! </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

Kindergarten Memories</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Journaling is going to become a part of my morning routine. The school start time changed quite a bit this year which now gives me almost 2 hours at home in the mornings after everyone else leaves for work and school before I have to leave. (I used to have 15 minutes!) A perfect time to enjoy a cup of tea and journal in my new snazzy covered book!</div>

My parents have some large gardens on some land that we call "The Farm". Originally the land was part of my grandparents dairy farm. Now my parents grow corn, potatoes, carrots, raspberries, strawberries, etc, etc. And then there's the pumpkins and gourds. Oh, man are there a lot of those. Today was the day to harvest all the beautiful and unique shaped pumpkins and gourds. It's become an annual tradition to invite friends out to bring in the harvest.<br />

Since one should always celebrate when one reaches the 3/7th mile mark, I decided a photo shoot at the farm was in order. </div>

<span style="margin: 0;"><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/lifeontheselvageedge/7936847998/">Scrap Vomit</a>, a photo by <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/lifeontheselvageedge/">Life on the Selvage Edge</a> on Flickr.</span></div>
I think we're going big (or go home) on this bad boy... our king sized bed has a store bought quilt on it {quilter hanging head in shame}.<br />
<br />
I'm thinking 7 blocks x 7 blocks. Which means 49 2.5" squares per block multiplied by 49 blocks for a grand totally of 2,401 2.5" squares. ( I always thought the name referred to the mishmash of squares colliding together, but maybe it's more appropriate for the reaction when you think of all those little tiny squares being cut and sewn together!)<br />
<br />
But I'm up for the challenge!! I've got 11 blocks done already. BRING IT ON!!<br />
<br />
It's perfect to use all the random fabric I have overfilling their storage bins, plus I can keep sewing in the midst of the self-imposed fabric diet I've put on myself. It's liberating to just put two random squares together and sew, without having to think about how it plays with the fabric next to it. We'll see how far I get, but I have a quilt retreat coming up in November... this may be the project I work on there too!<br />
